Background of the Study
Twitter threads have emerged as a distinctive form of online discourse, offering a continuous narrative format that encourages innovative morphosyntactic patterns. In Nigeria, Twitter threads often exhibit creative adaptations in sentence structure, word formation, and grammatical conventions to accommodate character limits and facilitate rapid conversation flow (Olu, 2023). Users employ strategies such as fragmentation, abbreviation, and unconventional punctuation to construct coherent narratives in a constrained format. These adaptations not only serve functional purposes but also reflect cultural influences and digital literacy levels. By analyzing the morphosyntactic features of Nigerian Twitter threads, this study aims to uncover patterns of language innovation that challenge traditional grammatical rules. The research explores how digital constraints foster new syntactic constructions and how code‑switching and colloquial expressions are integrated within these threads. This investigation provides insight into the dynamic evolution of language in digital environments and contributes to broader sociolinguistic theories regarding language change in the era of social media (Adeniyi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although Twitter threads are a vital component of Nigerian digital discourse, there is limited research on the specific morphosyntactic patterns they exhibit. The rapid evolution of language in these threads, driven by technological constraints and creative expression, is not well documented. Existing studies tend to focus on shorter tweets rather than extended threads, leaving a gap in understanding how continuous online narratives shape grammatical structures. This lack of detailed analysis impedes the development of comprehensive linguistic models that capture the impact of digital communication on syntax and morphology. This study aims to address this gap by systematically analyzing the morphosyntactic features present in Nigerian Twitter threads (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To identify morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian Twitter threads.

  • To analyze the influence of digital constraints on grammatical structures.

  • To evaluate the role of code‑switching in these patterns.

Research Questions

  • What morphosyntactic features characterize Nigerian Twitter threads?

  • How do digital constraints influence these grammatical constructions?

  • What is the impact of code‑switching on morphosyntactic variation in threads?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers a detailed examination of morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian Twitter threads, contributing to our understanding of digital language innovation. The findings will help refine theoretical models of language change in online environments and inform future research on the intersection of technology and linguistics. This work has practical implications for educators and communication strategists seeking to navigate the evolving digital discourse (Chukwu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphosyntactic Patterns: The combined aspects of word formation and sentence structure.

  • Twitter Threads: A series of connected tweets forming a continuous narrative.

  • Code‑Switching: Alternating between languages within a conversation.
